5 Tips to Using Them Responsibly

At one time, it was unheard of for students to have their own card but these days, credit cards for
college students are often a necessity rather than a luxury. With college costs and living expenses the way they are in our current economic situation, it’s almost impossible for a college student to do without some type of credit card.

Of course, all of the major credit card companies love students to get their cards and make it very easy to do so. But just as having a credit card has its good points, it can also have many bad points and students can get into trouble with debt rather quickly. Here are five tips to help college students use their credit cards responsibly.

1. Only buy what you really need – not what you want. Realize that your credit card isn’t free money. Every time you use it, it’s like a small loan. You are borrowing the money to buy an item and are charged interest until you pay it back.
2. Pay your bills on time. The reasons for this should be obvious but if you don’t pay your bills on time, you are not only defaulting on your responsibilities, but you are doing damage to your credit history and are going to pay more because you will now have to pay late fees.
3. Don’t exceed your credit limit. Just like not paying your bill on time, if you go over your line of credit, you will be charged with an extra fee.
4. Report a change of address before you move. This way, your bills can be forwarded and you won’t miss or be late on a payment.
5. Pay your credit card off every month. By disciplining yourself to do this, you will be making sure you don’t buy what you don’t need and it makes a favorable impression with the credit card issuer and raises your credit rating.

Credit cards for college students can give you a feeling of freedom and independence. But remember, with that independence come responsibility and it’s up to you to lay a foundation of good credit history. By following the above tips, you can do just that.
